Hi — I just started today and they told me to come here to get set up. I have no idea what I'm doing.
Welcome! No worries at all — that's exactly what I'm here for. I'm going to have you fully set up and ready to work in about an hour. Have a seat. Can I start with your name and employee ID?
Sure. I'm Carlos Mendez, ID number 4892.
Great, Carlos. I've got your account here. I'll set up your laptop, email, and access to the main systems. Do you also need your phone configured with company email?
Yes please. And what about the project management tool? My manager mentioned something called Asana.
I'll add Asana to your setup checklist. First let me get the core setup done, then I'll walk you through Asana. It's pretty straightforward.
Sounds good. What should I do in the meantime?
Just relax — or you can review your company welcome email if you have it on your phone. I'll walk you through everything as we go so you feel comfortable with it all.

How do you stay patient with non-technical users?
I remember that technology isn't everyone's strength, and that's exactly why I'm here. I adjust my language to the person's level, use analogies, and never make them feel inadequate. Patience is a professional skill I practice consciously.
What does a typical day look like for you?
My day typically starts with reviewing the ticket queue and prioritizing by urgency. Then I handle a mix of in-person help desk visits, remote sessions, and queue tickets. I also do proactive tasks: checking pending updates, setting up equipment for new hires, and following up on previous tickets.
How do you handle a situation where you have 10 users waiting and one issue is very complex?
I triage immediately: if the complex issue can be temporarily mitigated, I apply the workaround so that user can work, then address the other 9. If it can't be mitigated, I escalate it and manage the other queue in parallel. Communication is key — I keep everyone informed.
Tell me about a time you went above and beyond for a user.
A new employee arrived on her first day and her laptop hadn't been provisioned correctly. She had a video call with executives in 2 hours. I stayed through my lunch break, set up everything manually, ran a test call to confirm the camera and audio worked, and delivered the laptop 30 minutes early.
What software are you comfortable setting up for users?
Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, Zoom, Teams, VPN clients, antivirus, and common productivity software. I follow standard image deployment for laptops and can configure email on both iOS and Android devices.
How do you document issues you resolve?
In the ticketing system, I log the reported issue, steps I took, root cause, and resolution. I also add to our internal knowledge base when I solve a new or unusual issue so other technicians benefit from it.
What's your approach to setting up a new employee?
I follow a standard checklist: hardware setup, OS configuration, email and software installation, network access, VPN, security tools, and a walkthrough of the help desk process. I do a 10-minute orientation so they know where to go for help.
How do you handle a user who bypasses IT policies?
I explain the policy, the reason it exists, and the risk of bypassing it — without being condescending. If they persist, I document it and escalate to my manager. Security isn't negotiable, but I always start with education.
Are you comfortable managing Windows and Mac environments?
Yes. I support both daily. Mac troubleshooting often involves Finder, Keychain, and Time Machine. Windows involves Registry, Group Policy, and Active Directory integration. I'm more fluent in Windows but I'm comfortable switching between both.
Why IT support?
I enjoy solving problems and working directly with people. Every day is different, and there's real satisfaction in fixing something that was blocking someone's work. Help Desk also gives me exposure to a wide variety of systems and technologies — it's the best foundation for a long-term IT career.
