Your Professional Elevator Pitch

Herramientas:GEOVOICE

The 45 seconds that can change your career.

Every week, professionals in Latin America lose job opportunities, clients and partnerships because they cannot answer one simple question in English: "So, what do you do?"

By the end of this lesson you will have a pitch that is sharp, confident and memorable — one that works in job interviews, networking events, LinkedIn messages and client calls.

Why Most Pitches Fail

Most Latin American professionals make the same three mistakes when pitching in English:

01

They lead with their title, not their value

"I am a Systems Engineer at XYZ Company" tells someone what you are called. It does not tell them why they should care. Nobody hires a title. They hire results.

THE FIX

Start with what you do for people, not what you are called.

  • ❌ "I am a Marketing Manager"
  • ✅ "I help companies grow their online presence and turn followers into paying customers"
02

They translate directly from Spanish

Spanish and English business communication have different rhythms. "I am from the commercial area" sounds like a direct translation — because it is. Native speakers notice immediately.

THE FIX
  • ❌ "I am from the sales department" → ✅ "I lead sales"
  • ❌ "I am Engineer" → ✅ "I am a software engineer"
  • ❌ "I work in the area of marketing" → ✅ "I work in marketing"
  • ❌ "I make the accounts" → ✅ "I handle accounting"
  • ❌ "Pleased to meet you" → ✅ "Great to meet you"
03

They speak for too long or too short

Under 20 seconds sounds unprepared. Over 90 seconds loses the listener. The sweet spot is 30 to 45 seconds — confident, clear and focused.

THE FIX

Use the 4-part formula. Each part is one sentence. Four sentences, 45 seconds maximum.

The 4-Part Formula

Every great professional pitch has exactly four components. Master these and you will never struggle with this question again.

1

NAME — Simple and direct

"Hi, I am [First Name]." In business English, first name only in most situations. Save the last name for formal introductions or written communication.

EXAMPLES
  • ✅ "Hi, I am Carlos."
  • ✅ "Hello, I am María."
  • ❌ "Good day, I am Carlos Eduardo Martínez Pérez."
2

ROLE — What you do, not what you are called

Use an active verb that describes your function. Avoid passive descriptions like "I am in charge of" — they sound weak. Use strong verbs instead.

STRONG ROLE VERBS
  • I lead — para posiciones de liderazgo
  • I manage — para gestión de equipos o proyectos
  • I build — para desarrollo, construcción, creación
  • I drive — para resultados, estrategia, crecimiento
  • I oversee — para supervisión general
  • I help — para roles de servicio o consultoría
  • I design — para creativos y arquitectos
  • I develop — para software, productos, estrategias
3

VALUE — The result you create

This is the most important part. Tell them the outcome you produce — the problem you solve or the result you deliver. This is what makes people interested.

VALUE FORMULA

"I help [WHO] [ACHIEVE WHAT] by [HOW]"

  • "I help startups scale their sales by building outbound systems"
  • "I help companies reduce operational costs through process automation"
  • "I help professionals land remote jobs by optimizing their English and their profile"
4

HOOK — Turn a monologue into a conversation

End with a question that invites the other person to engage. This is the difference between a pitch and a conversation. The best networkers talk less and listen more.

HOOK QUESTIONS BY CONTEXT
  • Networking: "What brings you to this event?"
  • Sales: "What is your biggest challenge right now with [relevant topic]?"
  • Job interview: "What does success look like in this role for you?"
  • LinkedIn: "I would love to hear about what you are working on."

Adapting Your Pitch — 4 Real Situations

Situation 1 — Job Interview

Tell me about yourself.

This is NOT a life story. It is a professional pitch with context. Structure: Current role → Key achievement → Why this company.

Example: "I am a customer success manager with five years of experience in SaaS. In my last role I reduced churn by 30% by redesigning our onboarding process. I am particularly excited about this role because your company is solving a problem I have seen firsthand in the industry."

Situation 2 — Networking Event

So, what do you do?

Casual but strategic. Be conversational, not corporate. Lead with value, end with curiosity about them.

Example: "I help companies in Latin America build remote teams that actually perform. Most of my clients come to me after a bad experience with offshore hiring. What industry are you in?"

Situation 3 — LinkedIn Message

Written pitch — 3 sentences maximum

Hi [Name], I am [Name], a [role] who helps [who] [achieve what]. I came across your profile and noticed [specific observation]. I would love to connect and learn more about your work at [company].

Situation 4 — Client Call Opening

First 30 seconds with a prospect

Quick pitch before getting to business. Warm, confident, brief.

Example: "Before we dive in — I am Carlos, I lead partnerships at [company]. We work with companies like yours to [value]. But today I am here to listen — tell me what is going on with [their challenge]."

ADVANCED EXERCISE

Write THREE versions of your elevator pitch:

  1. The 15-second version — for when someone asks in passing. Name + Role + One value statement.
  2. The 45-second version — the full 4-part formula. This is your standard pitch.
  3. The 2-minute version — for formal introductions. Add a key achievement, a specific client result, and a clear call to action.

Record all three with GeoVoice™. The AI will evaluate your pronunciation, fluency and delivery. Aim for 80+ on all three before moving to the next lesson.

🆘 Survival Phrases — Elevator Pitch Emergencies

When you forget what to say

"Let me put it this way..." — buys you 2 seconds to reset and restart your pitch naturally.

When they ask a follow-up you did not expect

"That is a great question — the short answer is [answer]. I am happy to go deeper if you would like."

When you mispronounce something

Do not stop. Do not apologize. Keep going. Confidence matters more than perfection.

When they do not understand your accent

"Let me rephrase that — " and say it slower and clearer. Never say sorry for your accent.
