Every week, professionals in Latin America lose job opportunities, clients and partnerships because they cannot answer one simple question in English: "So, what do you do?"
By the end of this lesson you will have a pitch that is sharp, confident and memorable — one that works in job interviews, networking events, LinkedIn messages and client calls.
Most Latin American professionals make the same three mistakes when pitching in English:
"I am a Systems Engineer at XYZ Company" tells someone what you are called. It does not tell them why they should care. Nobody hires a title. They hire results.
Start with what you do for people, not what you are called.
Spanish and English business communication have different rhythms. "I am from the commercial area" sounds like a direct translation — because it is. Native speakers notice immediately.
Under 20 seconds sounds unprepared. Over 90 seconds loses the listener. The sweet spot is 30 to 45 seconds — confident, clear and focused.
Use the 4-part formula. Each part is one sentence. Four sentences, 45 seconds maximum.
Every great professional pitch has exactly four components. Master these and you will never struggle with this question again.
"Hi, I am [First Name]." In business English, first name only in most situations. Save the last name for formal introductions or written communication.
Use an active verb that describes your function. Avoid passive descriptions like "I am in charge of" — they sound weak. Use strong verbs instead.
This is the most important part. Tell them the outcome you produce — the problem you solve or the result you deliver. This is what makes people interested.
"I help [WHO] [ACHIEVE WHAT] by [HOW]"
End with a question that invites the other person to engage. This is the difference between a pitch and a conversation. The best networkers talk less and listen more.
Study these pitches. Each one follows the 4-part formula. Notice how none of them lead with a title.
"Hi, I am Andrés. I build mobile applications for fintech companies in Latin America. I help banks and payment platforms deliver seamless experiences to millions of users. What kind of tech challenges is your team working on right now?"
"Hi, I am Valentina. I run performance marketing campaigns for e-commerce brands. I help companies turn their ad spend into measurable revenue — my last client went from 2x to 6x ROAS in 90 days. Are you currently running paid campaigns?"
"Hi, I am Ricardo. I lead business development for a SaaS company serving the US market. I help mid-size companies cut their sales cycle in half by automating their outreach. What does your current sales process look like?"
"Hi, I am Daniela. I manage operations for a logistics company with teams across five countries. I help leadership make faster decisions by building systems that eliminate bottlenecks. What part of your operations keeps you up at night?"
"Hi, I am Felipe. I design brand identities and digital experiences for international startups. I help early-stage companies look credible and professional from day one. Are you currently working on any brand projects?"
"Hi, I am Camila. I manage customer success for a B2B software company. I help clients get maximum value from our platform — our team maintains a 95% retention rate. How do you currently handle customer onboarding?"
These are the words and phrases that make your pitch sound professional, not rehearsed. Master all of them.
This is NOT a life story. It is a professional pitch with context. Structure: Current role → Key achievement → Why this company.
Example: "I am a customer success manager with five years of experience in SaaS. In my last role I reduced churn by 30% by redesigning our onboarding process. I am particularly excited about this role because your company is solving a problem I have seen firsthand in the industry."
Casual but strategic. Be conversational, not corporate. Lead with value, end with curiosity about them.
Example: "I help companies in Latin America build remote teams that actually perform. Most of my clients come to me after a bad experience with offshore hiring. What industry are you in?"
Hi [Name], I am [Name], a [role] who helps [who] [achieve what]. I came across your profile and noticed [specific observation]. I would love to connect and learn more about your work at [company].
Quick pitch before getting to business. Warm, confident, brief.
Example: "Before we dive in — I am Carlos, I lead partnerships at [company]. We work with companies like yours to [value]. But today I am here to listen — tell me what is going on with [their challenge]."

"Let me put it this way..." — buys you 2 seconds to reset and restart your pitch naturally.
"That is a great question — the short answer is [answer]. I am happy to go deeper if you would like."
Do not stop. Do not apologize. Keep going. Confidence matters more than perfection.
"Let me rephrase that — " and say it slower and clearer. Never say sorry for your accent.
