Before you study a single word of academic vocabulary, before you write one practice essay, before you record one speaking response — you need to make one decision: IELTS or TOEFL?
Most students waste months studying for the wrong exam. By the end of this lesson you will know exactly which one to take, why, and how each one is scored — so every hour of preparation counts toward the right goal.
IELTS is preferred by UK, Australian, Canadian and New Zealand institutions. TOEFL is preferred by US institutions and increasingly accepted worldwide. Both are recognized globally — the choice depends on where you are applying.
Each of the four skills (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) is scored separately from 1 to 9. Your overall band is the average of all four, rounded to the nearest 0.5.
Most scholarship programs require Band 7.0 minimum. Fulbright and Chevening typically require 7.5.
Each section (Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing) is scored from 0 to 30. Total score is the sum of all four sections.
Fulbright requires a minimum of 100. Most Ivy League programs expect 110+.
Go to the admission requirements page of every university you are applying to. Most accept both, but some programs have a preference. If all your targets accept both, move to step 2.
IELTS and TOEFL test the same skills but in very different ways. Your natural strengths should influence your choice.
If you need to compare your current level against both exams, use this conversion table. It is not exact but gives you a reliable starting point.
Most students need 3 to 6 months of focused preparation to reach their target score. Plan backward from your application deadline.

This is not optional. You cannot build a study plan without knowing your starting point.
